High Relief vs. Low Releif
High relief Sculpture: the sculpture comes out of the flat surface farther. Low Relief Sculpture: The sculpture is lower and closer to the flat surface.
What is Mixed Media?
When artists use more than one medium (material) in their artwork.
Positive and Negative Space
NEGATIVE SPACE
Space is absent of any object
POSITIVE SPACE
Object is taking up space
What is Notan?
A Japanese word that means light-dark harmony.
Harmony
Harmony is when the elements of art are arranged to make an artwork look complete.
Similar colors, patterns, and shapes create harmony (unity) in artwork.
Balance
The way an artist organizes a composition. There can be symmetrical or asymetrical balance.

Symmetrical Balance
Composition is not the same on both sies, but has similar amounts of elements throughout.
Composition is the same on both sides.
Positive Space:
The subject or objects that take up room in an image.
Negative Space:
The area around or in between the objects in an image

Low vs. High Relief Sculpture
High relief, or alto-relief, is a type of relief sculpture where at least half of the design projects from the background or base.
Low relief, also called bas-relief, is a type of relief sculpture where the design is close to the background or base.

Mixed Media Part 1: Make the Collage Background
Step 1: Think about an animal you would like to create with collaged papers.
Step 2: Search "animal graphic outline" to find some images to help you get started.
Step 3: Look at your animal graphic and break it down into shapes in your head. (Follow Mrs. Baker's example during instructions.)

Dragons and Patterns on the Cantonese Assembly Hall These relief sculptures decorate the tiled roof of this assembly hall, which was used as a meeting place for the Chinese community of Hoi An. It is located in Central Vietnam and was made at the end of the 19th century CE.
State Names on the Lincoln Memorial In Washington, D.C., USA, the Lincoln Memorial shows relief sculptures along the top of the building. The states' names are carved into the stone, and eagles with wreaths and garlands are the relief sculptures. It was built from 1914 to1922 CE.
