Jan Van Eyck e la pittura fiamminga
Jan van Eyck visse tra il 1390 e il 1441. Fu un pittore fiammingo e perfezionatore della pittura ad olio. La sua carriera inizia all'Aia presso la corte di Giovanni di Baviera, conte d'Olanda. Dopo la morte del fratello Hubert, forse il suo primo maestro, nel 1425 viene nominato pittore di corte di Filippo il Buono, duca di Borgogna. Su incarico di Filippo compì molte missioni diplomatiche: si recò a Lisbona per concordare le nozze del duca con Isabella di portogallo, alla quale poi fece un ritratto. Dopo aver abitato per un po' nella città francese di Lill, nel 1432 si trasferì definitivamente a Bruges dove trascorse il resto della sua vita e morì nel 1441. A lui attribuiamo con certezza 20 dipinti.
