Central Ideas
A central Idea is the foundation of a Informational essay. It's the over reaching message in the essay. Section heading and titles can point to the Central Idea. Details can explain and add information to the text.
Details need to be strong, not weak. Strong details consist of statistics, facts, graphs, scientific observations, and expert findings. Weak details include bias, opinions, outdated information, incomplete information, and unverifiable information.
Objective Summaries
Objctive summaries describes the text, and only the text without the writers opinion.
When writing a summary, you should include the following: enough details to show how the writer supports the central idea, each section is summarized, recap important topics, and include the five "W's" and "H", who, what, where, when, why, and how?
Organizational Structures
There are five types of structures when organizing a summary. The structures include cause and effect, compare and contrast, classification sheme, chronological order, and pro and con.
- Cause and Effect- Organizes adn links ideas and facts to show causes
- Compare and Contrast- Highlights differences and similarities between events or key ideas
- Classification Sheme- Organizing and grouping related ideas or things
- Chronological Order- Ideas in time order
