Many countries had entered into alliances at this time, meaning the war was very quickly escalated to become a world conflict.
Many European counrties believed in the concept of nationalism, the belief that your country and culture is naturally superior to others. This further increased tensions.

Due to the disarray caused by World War I, the allied powers felt more desperate and felt that this was the only strategy that could avoid them spending all their resources on another war.
