What are some causes of cavities? -Cavities can be caused by bacteria in the mouth that stick to the teeth -Poor oral hygiene Sugary food or drinks -Constant buildup known as plaque -Frequent snacking -Dry mouth- saliva is protective
What are cavities?- cavities are areas of decay that form in the teeth. -Cavities happen when the hard surfaces of your teeth become damaged -They are caused by destruction to the outer layer of the tooth -A good way to think about a cavity is a “hole” or “hollow space” within the tooth
What is the role of nutrition in cavities? -Nutrition plays a very important role in the formation or prevention of cavities -Sugary foods and beverages are the primary cause of cavities -When sugar is consumed it combines with the bacteria in the mouth and produces an acid that eats away the outer layer of the tooth causing damage to the tooth. -The acid that is formed from the sugar being consumed starts to dissolve the outer layer of the tooth leaving a “hole” -Replacing the surgery foods with food that contain good nutrients may decrease the risk of cavities significantly!!!!!!
What are ways to prevent cavities? --Practice good oral hygiene (brushing and flossing 2x a day) -Limit the surgery foods and drinks );--DRINK WATER!!! -schedule regular dental visits- Sealants Fluoride/ Use a fluoride toothpaste
Does fluoride help with cavities? - Yes!!!! Fluoride is a great option to help prevent cavities -Fluoride helps prevent cavities by making the teeth strong and repairing the damage that the acid caused --Fluoride is always available at the dentist, but a good way to ensure that you are getting the fluoride needed is to use a toothpaste that contains fluoride -Fluoride reduces cavities on the outer layer of the teeth by 20-40 percent in adults
Role of plaque in caries formation -Plaque is a soft film of bacteria and food debris - -Plays a key role in the formation of caries -Plaque produces acids that attack the tooth and cause “holes - Buildup of plaque breaks the enamel down
Where to get fluoride -water -food (spinach, seafood, fresh fruit) -Toothpaste-mouthwash -Dentist -Supplements
Role of sealants in preventing cavities- A protective layer covering and coating the chewing surface of a tooth - Acts as a protective shield - Creates a smooth surface making it easier to clean- Prevents food from getting stuck in the grooves
