--WARNING--

WARNING! This final section covers some pretty heavy stuff - medical needs, health crises, and police and firefighter involvement. While the emergencies you learn about will hopefully never happen, it is good to be prepared. The worst time to learn about these things is when you need them most! While this is all designed for elementary and middle school students in mind, if it makes you feel more comfortable, have your adult sit next to you for a while!

Bleeding

Sprains & Fractures

Burns

When you're home alone, you may have to handle an injury with basic First Aid. The best way to avoid this is PREVENTION. While minor things can be handled by yourself or with a phone call to an adult, some things require an immediate 911 call.

First Aid & Emergencies

  • Keep areas safe from sharp items. Put away knifes, scissors, thumb tacks, etc.
  • Use protective equipment
  • Be careful around animals
  • Know where weapons are in the house and avoid them
  • Clean up spills immediately

13

  • Clean the area
  • Remove any debris by rinsing with water
  • Apply pressure to stop the bleeding
  • Cover the wound with a bandage
  • Call 911 if there is excessive blood loss or you are feeling faint

Treating Nosebleeds

Causes

Next

First Aid & Emergencies

  • Nosebleeds are fairly common.
    • They can be triggered from allergies, dry air, injury, picking your nose, or some people are just prone to them.

13

  • Get supplies such as paper towels, napkins, or tissues to catch the blood
  • Sit down
  • Pinch the bridge of your nose, lean slightly forward, rest until the bleeding stops
  • Call 911 if the bleeding lasts more than 20 minutes or you feel lightheaded.

Bleeding

Internal Bleeding

Causes

back to first aid

First Aid & Emergencies

  • Internal bleeding can be a small bruise or a very serious internal injury.
  • A bruise is technically internal bleeding, with blood poolng just under the skin. Most bruises are not severe and will go away on their own.
  • More severe internal bleeding is a result of blunt trauma from an object or falling.
  • The affected area of internal bleeding may be swollen, tender, and maybe discolored.

13

  • Apply cold packs
  • Bandages help distract from the pain and may remind you to be careful around the area, but they provide no medical support
  • If you think it is a severe injury, call 911 or your parent.

Treatment

Sprains & Fractures

What is it?

Next

First Aid & Emergencies

  • A sprain is an injury to soft tissue surrounding a joint
  • A fracture is a cracked or chipped bone

13

Sprains

Causes

Next

First Aid & Emergencies

  • A sprain is injury to soft tissue surrounding a joint due to stretching or tearing.
  • It is caused by an abnormal twist or stretching of the joint.
  • It can be caused by a fall or tripping over something.

First Aid & Emergencies

  • Cracked, chipped, or broken bones
  • Sharp pain or you may hear a snap
  • Sometimes there is deformity, swelling, and decreased mobility

13

Treatment

  • Call 911
  • DO NOT MOVE the injured part. This may do more damage.

Burns

What are they?

Next

First Aid & Emergencies

  • Burns are caused by skin having contact or exposure to fire or heat.
  • There are three different kinds of burns that range in severity.

13

First Aid & Emergencies

Burns

13

Burns

Types of Burns

back to first aid

First Aid & Emergencies

  • First-degree burns: redness of skin, mild swelling, slight pain
  • Second-degree burns: painful deep burn with red or blotchy appearance, possible blisters
  • Third-degree burns: extremely deep in the skin with black or white appearance of skin

13

Treatment

  • For any burn: NO ICE! NO OINTMENT!
  • First-degree burns: apply a cool, wet cloth or immerse in cool water. You can cover it loosely.
  • Second-degree burns: call an adult, apply cool water, never break blisters
  • Third-degree burns: this is a medical emergency, call 911!

Poison

What is it?

Poison

Remember:

back to first aid

First Aid & Emergencies

  • Poison is not just a bubbling green brew in a cauldron that a witch is stirring while laughing manically.
  • Many household items can be poisonous if not used correctly or if they are eaten, get into your eye, or are inhaled

13

Treatment

  • Call 911 or the Poison Control Center at 800-222-1222
  • If the poison is inhaled (fumes), move to fresh air.
  • If the poison is on the skin, rinse immediately with water.
  • If the poison is swallowed or in the eye, call 911 or the Poison Control Center

Skye is joined by Roderick, who is freaking out about being home alone, and Sunny, who is confident being home alone.

Um... a fire! Or you're being robbed!

Then you won't get in trouble. First Responders are here to help!

Or if you're feeling unsafe and want an officer to check on you!

I know the number for 911!

What if I call and they get here and nothing bad happened??? Like nothing at all?

But what if. My house is on fire. And there is someone robbing us. And there's a tornado. And the toilet flooded.

Yes! You can also call for a medical emergency.

Of course you do! But do you know WHEN to call it?

Well, did you think there was an emergency when you called?

Let's be realistic...the chances of a distaster happening are very slim, but its always good to be prepared!

Next

  • A silent 911 call is an option

What if you're choking or hiding and can't talk but need 911?

14

  • The dispatcher will be able to locate you from your landline phone number or with satellite technology from a cell phone

  • Move toward a door or window so that emergency responders can easily see you

Other Ways to Contact 911

Next

  • You can text 911

So what I'm hearing is....always know different ways to communicate!

...and always keep your communication device close by!

  • Some smart phones, smart watches, and other devices have emergency buttons

  • You can ask Alexa and GoogleHome to call 911

Police

Here are some quick facts about police officers you may not know...

And here are a few reminders...

Next

  • Police officers are often the first on a scene, regardless of the emergency, because they patrol the area and can respond the quickest
  • Police officers know First Aid and CPR
  • Police officers can stop by to do a well-check on people

Police do more than just get bad guys. They are here to PROTECT AND SERVE.

  • If you call 911 because you are scared while home alone, or there is a creepy person in your neighborhood, or you just generally feel uncomfortable, that's OKAY. Police officers would much rather show up and it's nothing than not be called and it's something.

Fire

Here are some quick facts about firefighters you may not know...

  • When arriving at a house, one firefighter does a lap around the house to see if anyone is near a window or needs help.
  • Most firefighters are cross-trained as Emergency Medical Technicians, or EMTs.

And here are a few reminders...

Firefighters serve with honor & bravery, running into burning buildings while everyone else is running out!

Next

  • The best plan in case of a fire is to GET OUT!
  • Do NOT spend time searching for or go back into a burning house for your pets. They will either find their way out, or the firefighters can get them.

Firefighter Atesh, can you tell us some more?

16

Why, of course I can!

First Aid & Emergencies

Fire

So what causes fires?

Next

ALWAYS...

  • sleep with your door closed
  • know how to open windows
  • check smoke detector batteries twice a year
  • unplug devices that aren't in use

16

NEVER...

  • put metal in the microwave
  • put plastic in the oven or on the stove
  • charge your phone on your bed
  • burn a candle while home alone

Unfortunately, lots of household items.

But here are some things to remember to prevent fires!

GET OUT

+info

Many fires start in the kitchen and may be small enough to smother by putting a pan on top of it. However, the safest choice is to GET OUT of the house! Items are replaceable, humans are not.

+info

Talk with your family to decide on a safe place, away from the house, where you can meet after evacuating. Think about the mailbox, a tree, or a neighbor's house.

+info

If you have a phone, it's a good idea to keep in close in case of emergencies. If you don't have a phone, go to a trusted neighbor's house and let them know about the emergency.

GET SAFE

CALL 911

16

Like Officer Green said, it's important to have a FIRE ESCAPE PLAN for your house.
