--WARNING--
WARNING! This final section covers some pretty heavy stuff - medical needs, health emergencies, and police and firefighter involvement. While the emergencies you learn about will hopefully never happen, it is good to be prepared. The worst time to learn about these things is when you need them most! While this is all designed for elementary and middle school students in mind, if it makes you feel more comfortable, have your adult sit next to you for a while!

First Aid
When you're home alone, you may have to handle an injury with basic First Aid.
The best way to avoid injury is PREVENTION.
While minor things can be handled by yourself or with a phone call to an adult, some things require an immediate 911 call.
We're going to go over 4 main topics of injury and the corresponding First Aid for each -Bleeding -Sprains & Fractures -Burns -Poison

Treating Abrasions, Cuts, and Puncture Wounds
Prevention
- Keep areas safe from sharp items. Put away knifes, scissors, thumb tacks, etc.
- Use protective equipment
- Be careful around animals
- Know where weapons are in the house and avoid them
- Clean up spills immediately
- Clean the area
- Remove any debris by rinsing with water
- Apply pressure to stop the bleeding
- Cover the wound with a bandage
- Call 911 if there is excessive blood loss or you are feeling faint

Treating Nosebleeds
Causes
Treatment
- Get supplies such as paper towels, napkins, or tissues to catch the blood
- Sit down
- Pinch the bridge of your nose, lean slightly forward, rest until the bleeding stops
- Call 911 if the bleeding lasts more than 20 minutes or you feel lightheaded.
- Nosebleeds are fairly common.
- They can be triggered from allergies, dry air, injury, picking your nose, or some people are just prone to them.

Internal Bleeding
Causes
- Internal bleeding can be a small bruise or a very serious internal injury.
- A bruise is technically internal bleeding, with blood poolng just under the skin. Most bruises are not severe and will go away on their own.
- More severe internal bleeding is a result of blunt trauma from an object or falling.
- The affected area of internal bleeding may be swollen, tender, and maybe discolored.
- Apply cold packs
- Bandages help distract from the pain and may remind you to be careful around the area, but they provide no medical support
- If you think it is a severe injury, call 911 or your parent.

Remember:
- Poison is not just a bubbling green brew in a cauldron that a witch is stirring while laughing manically.
- Many household items can be poisonous if not used correctly or if they are eaten, get into your eye, or are inhaled
Treatment
- Call 911 or the Poison Control Center at 800-222-1222
- If the poison is inhaled (fumes), move to fresh air.
- If the poison is on the skin, rinse immediately with water.

First Aid Kit
When you're home alone, you may need to treat a minor injury. It's always a good idea to have a well-stocked First Aid Kit and to know where it is!
FIND THE PAIRS
There are six items that are necessary for a First Aid Kit and your job is to find the matching pairs.

Um... a fire! Or you're being robbed!
Well, did you think there was an emergency when you called?
Yes! You can also call for a medical emergency.
Of course you do! But do you know WHEN to call it?
Let's be realistic...the chances of a distaster happening are very slim, but its always good to be prepared!

If you're mature enough to stay home alone, you're mature enough to handle some situations, like a stubbed toe or a homework problem. 911 should be reserved for true emergencies and when help is needed quickly!

Silent 911 Call
- A silent 911 call is an option
- The dispatcher will be able to locate you from your landline phone number or with satellite technology from a cell phone
What if you're choking or hiding and can't talk but need 911?
- Move toward a door or window so that emergency responders can easily see you

Other Ways to Contact 911
- You can text 911
So what I'm hearing is....always know different ways to communicate!
...and always keep your communication device close by!
- Some smart phones, smart watches, and other devices have emergency buttons
- You can ask Alexa and GoogleHome to call 911
*but if the power or internet are out, this won't work!

You betcha, pal.

Police do more than just get bad guys. They are here to PROTECT AND SERVE.
Police
Here are some quick facts about police officers you may not know...
And here are a few reminders...
- Police officers are often the first on a scene, regardless of the emergency, because they patrol the area and can respond the quickest
- Police officers know First Aid and CPR
- Police officers can stop by to do a well-check on people
- If you call 911 because you are scared while home alone, or there is a creepy person in your neighborhood, or you just generally feel uncomfortable, that's OKAY. Police officers would much rather show up and it's nothing than not be called and it's something.

Firefighter Atesh, can you tell us some more?
Why, of course I can!
16
Firefighters serve with honor & bravery, running into burning buildings while everyone else is running out!
Fire
And here are a few reminders...
Here are some quick facts about firefighters you may not know...
- The best plan in case of a fire is to GET OUT!
- Do NOT spend time searching for or go back into a burning house for your pets. They will either find their way out, or the firefighters can get them.
- When arriving at a house, one firefighter does a lap around the house to see if anyone is near a window or needs help.
- Most firefighters are cross-trained as Emergency Medical Technicians, or EMTs.

So what causes fires?
Fire
NEVER...
- put metal in the microwave
- put plastic in the oven or on the stove
- charge your phone on your bed
- burn a candle while home alone
ALWAYS...
- sleep with your door closed
- know how to open windows
- check smoke detector batteries twice a year
- unplug devices that aren't in use
But here are some things to remember to prevent fires!
Unfortunately, lots of household items.
