Choking Hazards

One activity you might not think about as being dangerous is eating. While you are home alone, there can be a possibility of choking. How do you deal with that by yourself? Well, this is Skye's freind, Roderick, who is very nervous about choking. Lucky for him, this section will walk through what causes choking, common choking hazard foods, the self-Heimlich manuever, and when to call 911.

Food & Eating

There are two "pipes" in the human throat. When humans eat food, the teeth chew it up, and the tongue works to swallow the food and move it down the esophagus, or food pipe.

Why, hello! I am Dr. Yance, Skye's neighbor, and allow me to explain about what causes choking with a quick anatomy lesson...

Next

Food & Eating

There is a little flap that covers the wind pipe when humans are eating so that food doesn't go down it. It is called the epiglottis.

The second "pipe" in a human's throat helps them get air to their lungs, and that is the trachea, or wind pipe.

Sometimes, the epiglotus doesn't work like it should and food goes down "the wrong pipe," blocking the airway. This is choking.

Next

Food & Eating

Now that you know how it works, how can you prevent choking?

DO NOT talk or laugh while chewing & swallowing.

The air moving through the trachea can interfere with eating.

DO NOT eat while laying down or moving around

Sitting at a table is the safest way to eat.

DO chew the food, unlike this guy.

Take time to enjoy your food and chew it slowly before swallowing.

DO cut foods into smaller peices.

Hot dogs can be cut into long slices, instead of circles; grapes can be cut into quarters

Next

Food & Eating

But...what happens if you DO start choking?

1. STAY CALM!

2. Call 911 and put it on speaker. Even if you cannot talk, there is a thing called a silent 911 call. You could also text 911.

3. If you're coughing, that's good. Keep coughing! That means air is getting to your lungs and will hopefully create force to push the stuck object up and out.

4. If you can't hear yourself cough, that means your trachea (windpipe) is blocked.

5. If you stop coughing and/or can't breathe, begin the self-heimlich manuever.

Food & Eating

You can call 911, the operator will figure out your location, and then you move to a door or window where the emergency crews can easily see you.

You will not be able to run to a neighbor's house because you won't have enough oxygen....

Great question, Roderick! You can do what is called a silent 911 call.

....so always keep your communication device nearby!

Hold on, Dr. Yance! If I am choking, how am I supposed to talk to the 911 operator?

Oh, that makes sense! Thanks!

Choking Hazards

So...what if I am home alone and HUNGRY? What are some foods I should avoid because they're common foods to choke on?

Let's play Hangman to review!

So what do all these things have in common? They're small and can get stuck in the windpipe.

....wait. What IS an esophagus?

In all of these situations, TRUST YOUR GUT. Human instincts are strong and if something feels wrong, chances are, it probably is.

Call 911 and they can send a police officer for a well check. They are happy to do this and you will not get in trouble if it is a genuine concern!

Call or text an adult to let them know what's happening.
