Defending Champ by Mike Lupica is a realistic fiction book. The author's purpose is persuasion. The author keeps making points that it is unfair that the boy's soccer gets new jerseys and soccer balls, when the girl's soccer team might get cut from the league because they are struggling finantialy.
Defending Champ
Alex pulls together money by playing a friendlies match against the boys soccer team as a fundraiser. They are successful and get money for soccer. She then visits Lindsey and they become friends and find out they have lots of things in common. They won The Game and raised 5,000 dollars.
Money
Alex goes to her local ice cream shop with her friends that support and help her come up with ideas for getting money. She thinks she is very lucky to have friends like them. They always go there to hang out and talk when they are bored.

Alex wanted to switch from soccer to football. After her football season, she wanted to switch back to soccer, but a person named Lindsay didn't want her to. Everyone else said she could, but they had a bigger problem that had to do with money.

Alex Carlisle was on the boy's football team when she was 12 years old. She was the quarterback for the Orville owls and was really good. There were lots of sexist guys that said she could't be on the team. She ignored them and led them to victory.
