big goals

The objectives of this program are to help educators build confidence in integrating the arts into their lesson plans by showing that the arts are accessible and can be used in any subject area. Participants will learn a simple and practical framework (PILA) for planning and teaching, ensuring it is easy to remember and apply. By the end, educators will feel comfortable and ready to creatively implement this framework in their teaching.

oBJECTIVES

Having a clear destination is key! Define your goals and work backwards Think of planning as the what of the lesson - It's not yet about the why or the how

Arts Integrated Framework

PILA is the framework that will guide you through planning arts integrated lessons, units, and even assessments! Each letter stands for various processes from planning to evaluation. P for planning I for inspiration L for layering A for assessment

Remember to think about what your students like, what you like, and how it fits into the unit. Make sure the art you choose aligns with your lesson’s goals. And don’t be afraid to experiment!

Steps for Arts Integration

Art is anything created with imagination and skill to express important ideas or feelings. So quite a lot of things qualify as art like:

  • Paintings
  • Literature
  • Dance
  • Architecture

"bare Necessities"

Think of planning like a skeleton. This is the "bare bones" portion of your lesson. The "muscles" are added in the inspiration phase and are "worked out" through layering. The results of your labor is shown through the assessments!

  • What do you want your students to walk away with at the end of each lesson? How do you ensure this aligns with their long-term learning goals?
  • When planning your lessons, how do you balance covering essential content with making room for student inquiry and creativity?
  • In what ways do you adapt your planning to account for students' prior knowledge or different learning styles?

Questions to Consider:

Brain Targeted Teaching is a planning framework optimizes learning experiences based on how the brain naturally functions. The model is broken into 6 brain targets - Emotional Climate, Physical Environment, Designing the Learning Experience, Mastery of Content and Skills, Application of Knowledge, and Evaluation and Assessment.
