Group Roles Approach

Each learner interacts with the full task, but will have a different lense to process through or different responsibility to contribute.

Grouping Strategies

Jigsaw Approach

Each learner takes an essential piece of the lesson to become an expert in in order to teach to their group.

Finding Connections

On a sticky note, write your name and respond to the following prompts:

  • What can you commit to implementing in your current or next unit to level up the interaction in your class?
  • What additional support do you need from T&L Team to be successful?

During each planning period, participants collaborated to define "interactive lessons," and ChatGPT synthesized each definition into our final SLHS definition:

An interactive lesson is a student-centered approach that promotes active participation, collaboration, and communication, allowing students to engage with content through various activities and resources in a safe, goal-oriented environment, where the teacher acts as a facilitator.

AVID - Jigsaw Strategy

Jigsaw

The Jigsaw structure is best when the divided content is meaningful on it's own, and when sharing in home groups allows for additional relevant learning.

"Jeopardy is a fun and competitive game that helps bring multiple concepts together before an assessment. Games are always a great way to keep students engaged, but it’s important to first create a positive classroom environment in which students feel comfortable participating, competing, and making mistakes."

Jeopardy

-Jesus Rojas (Math)

"I like using Blooket in my classes because it brings out students' competitive side while keeping them engaged with the material. It adds a fun twist to review content, and I can tailor the games to fit any lesson, making the experience both interactive and relevant. Watching them get excited over learning makes the whole class more enjoyable for everyone!"

Blooket

-Mayra Fragozo (SEI)

Gimkit is a classroom game-show platform where students compete by answering questions on their electronic devices. Instead of earning points, students earn virtual currency, which they can "invest" during the game to boost their score. Games can be played live or can be assigned as independent practice. You know who loves to use this learning tool?

Gimkit

Reciprocal Teaching Strategy

Group Roles

The Group Roles structure is best when you want each learner to engage with the full task, but want them to have a specific responsibility or look closely for a particular element. When learners share out with home groups, they have a deeper understanding of the whole topic.

Quizlet

-Tim Rebek (Social Studies)

"Quizlets are easy to create from the teacher's side and it allows each individual student to use the flashcard feature as well as matching games to help learn the material. It avoids students from having to hand make flash cards.Quizlet live allows students to collaborate and compete in teams working together in order to answer a series of multiple choice questions to race to the finish line faster than Mr. Rebek races to the lunch line (is that even possible?)"

"What's not to love about this platform? Student buy-in 90% of the time with the ability of creating their own avatars pre-game and its competitive/knowledge based nature."

Kahoot

- Maria Sierra (English)

Quizizz can be used to create interactive lessons, polls, surveys, and even memes that can be embedded into a quiz or lesson. These lessons and quizzes can be taken by students outside of class or shared live by instructors for in-class assessment. Instructors using Quizizz also have access to a large library of already made games, lessons, and quizzes across a variety of subjects and levels to use as a template for building a new quiz, or as a ready-made option.
