SCENARIO 1: Respectful Interactions Blake was waiting in a very long lunch line when Gabriel walked into the cafeteria. As Blake dragged his tray across the countertop, Gabriel said, “Hurry up!” Then he pushed Blake out of his way. The boys' teacher saw the exchange, and pulled Blake and Gabriel aside. She reminded both boys about engaging in respectful interactions both in and out of the classroom. She asked Gabriel to apologize for pushing Blake, and then asked Blake to hold, not drag, his tray from now on. The teacher reminded both boys that engaing in respectful practices such as not dragging school property and not showing was important to a postive classroom community.
SCENARIO 2: If and Then In room 102, the teacher allows students to play on the computer during free time, but they need to share with other classmates. Iamni has been on the computer during most of the free time and Anisa wants computer time too. The teacher has noticed that several of the students were getting impatient with Iamni, but the teacher also knew that Imani wasn't the only student who played on the computer during most of the free time period. The teacher decided the best solution was to create a computer time schedule for all students so that they could have equal computer time. This structure would be more consisent and promote sharing in the classroom.
SCENARIO 3: Shen forgets to do his writing activity and sees a friend who’s done and reading. Shen leans over to them and whispers, “Hey,can you tell me what to write?” The teacher overhears Shen asking the friend to tell him what to write. The teacher asks Shen if he needs help, and Shen admits he does, but he is embarrassed. The teacher tells Shen she understands, and that learning to read is hard, but reminds Shen that he can do hard things. The teacher then reminds Shen that asking other student, even a friend, to his work for him is not okay- that is cheating. It is better to ask for help when you don't understand.
