Elizabeth II
70 years of reign
Her life
Elizabeth II was born on April 21, 1926, the daughter of Prince Albert, Duke of York (later King George VI), and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. She wasn't originally expected to become queen, but everything changed in 1936 when her uncle Edward VIII abdicated, and her father became king. From then on, Elizabeth was educated as the heir presumptive.
During World War II, she took on her first public duties, becoming a symbol of hope for the nation. On February 6, 1952, after her father’s death, Elizabeth became queen at only 25 years old. Her coronation in 1953 was broadcast live on television, marking the beginning of a reign that would span decades of significant global change.

‘Everyone is our next, no matter what race, creed or colour.’ ‘It is worth remembering that it is often the small steps, not the giant leaps, that make the most lasting change.’
She was very wise and smiling.
One of Elizabeth’s key traits was her strong sense of duty and discretion, which helped her remain a steady figure during the turbulent 20th and 21st centuries. During her reign, the UK saw the decolonization of Africa and the Caribbean, the end of the British Empire, and the transformation of the Commonwealth into a group of sovereign nations. Despite moments of crisis, such as the Falklands War, internal tensions, and Brexit, Elizabeth remained above political disputes.
Turbulent centuries
Royal family
However, her family life was less stable. Her marriage to Prince Philip, lasting over 70 years, was a constant in her life, but scandals and crises, such as the messy divorce between Charles and Diana, tested the royal family. Despite these challenges, the queen managed to keep the trust of the British people, ensuring the monarchy stayed relevant in modern times.
In 2022, Elizabeth celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years on the throne, a historic achievement that highlighted her importance as a monarch. She passed away on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96, at Balmoral Castle, ending her long reign and beginning the era of her son, King Charles III. Her legacy is one of resilience, stability, and public service through times of great change.
