The Epiphany
January 6
Aurora Pelin 3°a
Who is she?
She is a gentle old woman who travels on a broom, leaving gifts and sweets to children all over Italy. Children wait for the arrival of the Befana on the night of January 5. They hang up socks or leave shoes by the fireplace or window sill, hoping that the Befana will fill them with candies, chocolates and small gifts if they were good or coal if they were bad.
Legend and Origins
According to tradition, the Befana was an elderly woman who received a visit from the Three Kings during their journey to Bethlehem to find Baby Jesus. They asked for directions and invited her to join them, but she refused saying that she was too busy doing housework. Later, she repented of her decision and began to seek Baby Jesus, bringing gifts with her. However, she could not find it. For this reason, every year on the eve of the Epiphany, she visits children’s homes and leaves gifts in the hope of finding Baby Jesus..
What is her message?
The Befana is considered a symbol of generosity, kindness and spirit of giving. Her story teaches the importance of hospitality, compassion and joy to give without expecting anything in return.
