THE UNION JACK
The flag
The Union Jack or Union Flag is the national flag of the United Kingdom. Its colors are blue, red and white and it's the combination of the crosses of St. George (England), St.Patrick (Ireland), and St. Andrew (Scotland).
In 1606 during the reign of James VI the flags of Scotland and England were united. Then in 1801, after the Union Act, at this flag was added the Ireland's cross, so it was born the Union Flag.
The evolution of the flag
The origin of the Union Jack's name
The name "Union Jack" probably come from the word "jack-et" of english and scots soldiers or from the Latin names of James VI who created the first "union" in 1603.It can also come from a proclmation of Charles II where the flag had to be flown only on the Royal Navy as a "jack"(small), a small flag at the bowsprit.
The use of the Union jack
At the beginning the Union Flag was a Royal Flag and it was used only by ships. It is still now above the Royal Residence but it's also on the top of the governement buildings in special days of the governement or of the royal family and it is the official and civil flag of the UK.
