Limiting Factors and Carrying Capacity
A limiting factor is an environmental factor that tends to limit population size. The resource that is most limited is the one that sets the carrying capacity. If there's enough food for 500 squirrels, but only room for 200 the limiting factor would be the space because that is the factor that supports the lowest number of animals Think of it like a barrel filled with water. If one side of the barrel is broken (like in the diagram to the right), then the barrel cannot fill up all the way. That lowest part of the barrel would be called a limiting factor because it is the factor that keeps the the population from reaching its full potential. There will always be a limiting factor because you cannot have an unlimited number of organisms living in a community Carrying capacity is the number of organisms a certain community can support. The carrying capacity is always determined by the limiting. Like the squirrel example above because the space would be the limiting factor the carrying capacity of that certain community of squirrels would be 200. Although a community has a carrying capacity the amount of organisms is almost never at the carrying capacity (look at the image to the right). This is because there will always be at least one or two organisms more of less than the carrying capacity at all times. Click on the letter for the section of the barrel that would be considered the "limiting Factor."
