Why does Music help us learn?

Music has been an integral part of human culture for millennia, and its influence on our brains is profound.Recent research has illuminated the powerful connection between music and memory, suggesting that incorporating music into educational practices can significantly enhance learning and retention.Music also lights up nearly all of the brain — including the hippocampus and amygdala, which activate emotional responses to music through memory; the limbic system, which governs pleasure, motivation, and reward; and the body’s motor system. This is why it's easy "to tap your feet or clap your hands to musical rhythms," says Andrew Budson, MD '93, chief of cognitive and behavioral neurology at the VA Boston Healthcare system

MUSIC Impacts memory and learning

Music positively impacts every dimension of your students’ learning and development. It speaks to the physical, cognitive, communication, social-emotional, and sensory domains. Music helps students learn and remember new information.Emotional Engagement: Music evokes emotions, and emotions are strongly linked to memory formation. When learning is paired with music that elicits positive emotions, the information becomes more memorable.Pattern Recognition: Music is inherently structured, with patterns in melody, rhythm, and harmony. This structure can help organize information in the brain, making it easier to recall. Multi-sensory Engagement: Music engages multiple senses, including auditory, emotional, and even motor if movement is involved. This multi-sensory experience strengthens neural connections and enhances memory encoding. Contextual Learning: Music can create a specific atmosphere or context for learning, making it easier to retrieve information later by recalling the associated music.
