O que são geossítios

Geossítios são locais bem delimitados geográficamente, e que concentram formações geológicas com grande valor científico, estético, ecológico, turístico, cultural e educativo. Nesse local podem ser encontados fósseis, rochas ou até solo que contém características próprias desse local, que ajudam a contar a história da Terra. Um conjunto de geossítios forma um Património Geológico.

Para poder chamar um local de geossítio temos que ter em atenção a sua geodiverssidade, que consiste na sua variedade natural de materiais e processos geológicos e geomorfológicos, que são responsáveis pela formação da paisagem.

PorquÊ que apenas certos locais são denominados geossítios?

Dentre estes materiais, estão os minerais, as rochas, os fósseis e as formas de relevo, por exemplo. Dentre os processos, incluem-se os da dinâmica interna (vulcanismo, tectonismo) e externa (intemperismo, sedimentação). Juntamente com a biodiversidade, a geodiversidade constitui a diversidade natural do nosso planeta
