OVERVIEW

In this lesson, we will look at the primary lobes of the cerebrum. We will study each lobe's location and function and see how our lobes work while doing some activities.

THE BRAIN

The brain is the main organ of the nervous system. On average, an adult brain weighs approximately 3 pounds.

8

9

The brain controls thought, memory, emotion, touch, motor skills, vision, breathing, temperature, hunger, and every process that regulates our body.

The temporal lobe processes auditory information. The word "auditory" is related to the sense of hearing. The temporal lobe stores the memory of images tied to sounds. It also helps you understand the meaning of words and the emotions behind spoken language.

Imagine you are John Bramblitt. You were born seeing, but now your occipital lobe is no longer processing your sense of sight. On the next slide, you will see a picture. Commit it to memory. Then, close your eyes and, using your memory and sense of touch, try to draw what you saw. No peeking!

A Simple Challenge

You will need a stopwatch or someone to time you for the next activity. On the first slide, time yourself reading as fast as you can the set of words for colors as they appear. Record your time.On the second slide, time yourself naming as fast as you can the colors of the words. Record your time.

How did you do?

Did you find it more challenging to name the colors of words than simply reading words for colors? If you had an easier time reading words than naming the colors that differed from the words for colors, this is because you read colors in the left hemisphere of your brain while you identify colors in the right hemisphere. Now, thank your brain for working like a champ!

The brain is AWESOME AND POWERFUL! Nice work using yours today!!
