Emergence of AI

The AI education industry is expected to reach a net worth of 20 billion by 2027 (Pop et al, 2024) AI tools have long been a part of the educational experience, playing chess against the computer, utilizing digital assistants, virtual reality, and simulations all have been powered by AI for decades. (Pop et al, 2024)

Fall 2022 - Chat GPT emerges as an open-access large language model of generative text artificial intelligence (AI) source (Pop et al, 2024).

Key Terms

Large Language Model (LLM) - an AI system that is trained on large amounts of text and can learn without human input and outperform traditional AI models (Walczak & Cellary, 2023). Generative AI - a machine that utilizes existing information to create entirely new things such as text, pictures, or simulations without a human (Adventures with AI, 2024)

Educators Concerns with AI

- Concerns about use as a primary source - Having AI write assignments for them

Loss of Learning Capability

- Students will use AI to 'learn' concepts - Students will have a loss of critical thinking skills

AI will Replace Instructors

- Students will prefer digital instruction - Students will simply 'ask' AI rather than learn from a primary source

(Walczak & Cellary, 2023)

AI Benefitting Educators

Writing Lesson Plans
Diversifying Assignments

We should allow AI to assist us in the processes that take time away from instruction and developing student relationships

Brainstorming Solutions
Creating Engaging Imagery
Creating Rubrics & Templates
Generating Comments on Reports

Realities

AI may alter job functions but will never replace the human instructor's ability to connect with and inspire students (Walczak & Cellary, 2023)
Much like the introduction of the internet, calculators, spell check, google, and Wikipedia; AI is a new tool that requires training for both educators & students to ensure appropriate use.
Proper utilization of AI can strengthen and refine student's critical thinking skills (Pop et al, 2024)
AI is not going to 'go away' now that it has been introduced to the market, educational systems must adapt to the new tools as they become available.

Professional Development

Before instructors can effectively manage their student's use of AI they must first become proficient at utilizing the tool themselves

Ethical AI use requires instructors to adopt AI to improve educational outcomes and provide support to students (Pop et al, 2024)

Implementation within curriculum

To educate students on the proper use of AI as a tool within the educational system, we must incorporate lessons on AI use at multiple levels of the curriculum.

School Librarians / Media Specialists can assist in the education of both instructors and students and promote ethical practices (Adventures with AI, 2024).
Consistent and routine incorporation of the proper use of AI alongside lessons on research, writing, and academic dishonesty throughout secondary and higher education is required to develop a student base who knows how to utilize the tool.
Workshops can teach techniques in the evaluation and assessment of credibility and potential bias in AI outputs, leading to an empowered and discerning student (Adventures with AI, 2024).

90%Of students have engaged with AI in one way or another during their studies

Costs & Continuing concerns

Further research, professional development, and investment in revising the current curriculum represent costs that stakeholders will need to prioritize for AI to become an asset rather than a detraction from students learning.

50% Of students have utilized generative AI to assist in their writing

Regarless if they are currently using AI, the majority of students feel it should be allowed in education and they should be taught how to use it.

Labor Markets are showing a shift away from low-skilled production workers and towards a highly qualified workforce that knows how to utilize AI

(Walczak & Cellary, 2023)

Basic Concepts

  • We are visual beings. We are capable of understanding images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.
  • Narrative beings. We tell thousands and thousands of stories. ⅔ of our conversations are stories.
  • Social beings. We need to interact with each other. We learn collaboratively.
  • Digital beings. We avoid becoming part of the content saturation in the digital world.
  • Creative beings. Fun is needed for creativity, creativity for innovation, innovation for success... Fun is success.
  • Explorer beings. We turn visual communication into an experience when we add interactivity, animation, and storytelling.

Disciplines like Visual Thinking facilitate visually rich note-taking thanks to the use of images, graphics, infographics, and simple drawings. Go for it!

Tools and Resources

Did you know...90% of the information we assimilate comes through sight? Visual resources are very helpful to reinforce your message: images, illustrations, gifs, videos... Not only because they remain in memory, but also because they are more attractive and easier to understand.

  • It is clear and structured
  • Tells stories hierarchically.
  • Matches your audience.
  • Adapts fonts and color to the theme.
  • Includes images and entertains.
  • Represents data with graphics.
  • Uses timelines.
  • Is animated and interactive.
  • Excites the brain through multimedia elements.
  • Does not exceed with bullet points 🙃.

Practical Examples

Your content is liked, but it only engages if it's interactive. Capture the attention of your audience with an interactive photograph or illustration.

With this function... You can add additional content that excites your audience: videos, images, links, interactivity... Whatever you want!
