It takes a planet to explore the universe.

Facts I

  • The universe is approximately 13.8 billion years old.
  • Light from the Sun takes about 8 minutes and 20 seconds to reach Earth.
  • There are an estimated 100-200 billion galaxies in the observable universe.
  • If you could travel at the speed of light, it would still take you over 4 years to reach the nearest star, Proxima Centauri, from Earth.
I see Earth! It is so beautiful!

Facts II

  • There’s a mysterious "Great Attractor" pulling galaxies, including ours, toward it.
  • The Moon is slowly moving away from Earth at a rate of about 3.8 cm (1.5 inches) per year.
  • One day on Venus is longer than a year on Venus, due to its slow rotation.
  • The term "astronaut" comes from the Greek words meaning "star sailor."
  • Astronauts grow about 2 inches taller in space.
  • The first human in space was Yuri Gagarin in 1961.
  • Jupiter is so massive that all the other planets in our solar system could fit inside it.
I'd love to go back to space, I don't know any astronaut who doesn't want to.

Facts III

  • The first successful artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched on October 4, 1957.
  • Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969.
  • Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space in 1963.
We must still think of ourselves as pioneers to understand the importance of space.

List IV

The International Space Station orbits Earth every 90 minutes.

The Hubble Space Telescope was launched in 1990.

Comets are made of ice, dust, and rock,

A year on Neptune lasts 165 Earth years.

Space is a near-perfect vacuum, so sound can't travel.

NASA's Voyager 1 is 14 billion miles away from Earth.

We knew it was going to be difficult to get to the moon. We didn't know how difficult.

The overriding impression I got of life on Earth is how robust it is.

Ed Lu, American physicist and former NASA astronaut

quotes

“It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth."

Neil Armstrong, Astronaut

"When I watched the horizon, I saw the abrupt, contrasting transition from the earth’s light-colored surface to the absolutely black sky."

Yuri Gagarin, Cosmonaut

"Let me say, as I sit here before you today having walked on the Moon, that I am myself still awed by that miracle."

Buzz Aldrin, Astronaut
Since that time, I have not complained about the weather once single time.

Dawn of a Sun-like Star

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has captured a new image of a triple-star system,, a young variable star that is younger than 10 million years old.

I realized up there that our planet is not infinite. It’s fragile.

Saturn and Its Northern Aurora

Saturn in 2018 and 2017's auroras on Saturn's north polar region, highlights the unique ultraviolet visibility of Saturn's auroras.

Astronaut Steven L. Smith

When I first looked back at the Earth, standing on the Moon, I cried.

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) transitions back to its normal observing routine.

If offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask what seat. Just get on.

Don't tell me that man doesn't belong out there. Man belongs wherever he wants to go--and he'll do plenty well when he gets there.

There is room for millions of worlds as large or larger than ours, and each of them millions of miles apart from each other.

ProcesS I

Search for Life

We have only searched 10% of Mars and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn.

Voyagers

Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 have explored 0.01% of our overall exploration.

Mars

50% of all space exploration has been sent to Mars.

It’s an interesting place to be. I recommend it.

Process II

Mars

We have explored about 25% of the Moon.

Earth

We have explored about 80% of the Earth.

Moon

We have explored about 5% of the Moon.

I see more moon missions as delaying Mars, which is a much more interesting place to go.

Versus I

VS

Earth

Earth is a has an atmosphere composed of 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen, supporting a diverse biosphere.

Mars

Mars is a rocky planet with a thin atmosphere, approximately 95% carbon dioxide, and evidence of ancient activity suggesting past liquid water.

Each time man travels out into space, attention focuses on all people, not just scientists.

Pluto Flyby

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft made its historic flyby of Pluto on July 14, 2015, becoming the first mission to provide detailed images and data of the dwarf planet and its moons.

Hubble Telescope

Let the communication flow!

Launched on April 24, 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope has revolutionized our understanding of the universe. Operating in ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared light, Hubble has contributed to key discoveries, including the expansion rate of the universe, the presence of exoplanets, and insights into galaxy formation.

Moon Landing

The Apollo 11 mission culminated in the historic Moon landing on July 20, 1969, when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the lunar surface. Armstrong famously declared, "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind,".

Yuri Gagarin

Yuri Gagarin's historic space journey took place on April 12, 1961, when he became the first human to orbit the Earth. Gagarin completed a single orbit, traveling approximately 40,000 kilometers in about 108 minutes.

Sputnik 1

The Sputnik 1 satellite was a 58.0 cm-diameter aluminum sphere that carried four whip-like antennas that were 2.4-2.9 m long. The antennas looked like long "whiskers" pointing to one side. The spacecraft obtained data pertaining to the density of the upper layers of the atmosphere.
