Photosynthetic assimilation of CO2 is central to the metabolism of plants. As atmospheric concentrations of CO2 rise, how will this affect the plants we depend on?

Humans and photosynthesis

Humans have altered the rates of photosynthesis and modified the productivity in the ecosystems through different activities such as:

  • Deforestation, habitat destruction and urbanization
  • Agricultural activities (crops available feed growing global human population)
  • Uses of fertilizers, increase the nutrients (Nitrogen and Phosphorous) in soil and water known as eutrophication, and reduced the oxygen levels . In the soil promoted the growing of toxic plants.
  • Human freshwater use.
  • Increasing the release of pollutants and waste, increasing the levels of greenhouse gases as a product of different activities(burning of fossil fuels, agricultural activities, and deforestation).

How the the ecosystems affects the photosynthesis?

• Amount of sunlight • Temperature • Precipitation • Productivity and biomass • Nutrients such as Phosphorous, Nitrogen (limited amount can decreased the productivity) • Soil quality • Wildfires • Water acidity • Oxygen leves • Species interactions (Population size affects productivity and biomass) • Evolutionary Processes

Importance of the Photosynthesis

It is a chemical process (plants, algae, and some bacteria) that uses sunlight's energy to transform carbon dioxide CO2 (a greenhouse gas) from the atmosphere, and water, sugars. (Cellulose, glucose, fructose).

  • Complex carbohydrates
  • lipids
  • proteins
  • wood
  • leaves, flowers and fruits
  • roots of plants.
Why is important this process?

Productivity of a ecosystem is the amount of organic matter produced by the photosynthesizing organisms. Energy Flows through the biosphere as organisms eat the organic matter produced during the photosynthesis. We know this a the trophic chain.
