The History of

RACISM

Racism has influenced many historical events and has caused multiple wars and conflicts. Understanding this issue is essential to recognize the damage it has caused throughout history and to prevent it from happening again in the present or future. Racism is the discrimination, marginalization, or unequal treatment of individuals or groups based on their race, ethnicity, or skin color.

Timeline

Scientific racism became more popular, with theories asserting that white races were superior. This provided an ideological basis for justifying slavery and colonization.

The British Empire banned slavery in its colonies, freeing many slaves and marking a significant advance against institutional racism.

With European colonization and the transatlantic slave trade, race began to be used to justify slavery, particularly of Africans.

The British Empire banned the slave trade, marking the beginning of abolitionist movements in the Western world.

Activists like Martin Luther King Jr. led movements advocating for civil rights in the U.S. resulting in the passing of the Civil Rights Act (1964) and the Voting Rights Act (1965).

Slavery was banned in the United States with the passing of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, though racial discrimination continued.

The end of apartheid in South Africa and the election of Nelson Mandela as the country’s first Black president marked another important step in the fight against racism.

The United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, proclaiming equal rights for all people, regardless of race.

Influential people

-Carl Brashear He was the first African American to become a Master Diver in the U.S. Navy. Despite facing discrimination and serious injuries, he overcame obstacles and became a symbol of perseverance and dedication. His life inspired the movie "Men of Honor."

-Rosa Parks She refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in 1955.

-Nelson Mandela He was a South African leader who fought against apartheid, was imprisoned for 27 years, and later became the country's first Black president in 1994.

-Harriet Tubman She was a slave who escaped and then helped hundreds of other slaves find freedom through the "Underground Railroad.”

-Martin Luther King He was a civil rights leader who advocated for racial equality through nonviolent protest in the U.S.
