Introduction

Social Emotional Learning & Classroom management

After assessing the data from the needs survery, it was clear that SEL and classroom management are the top two priorities for the staff at CMS. I also followed up by asking why those two topics are most important. Many said our school is heavily enrolled with students from low income families. Social Emotional Learning and Classroom Management would benefit these students most. 1. Help them learn to respect one another, and teachers. How to communicate. 2. Help the students take responsiblity for their behavior. Learn to self-regulate.

ENGAGE

Ask students to share, in a short brainstorming session, what words, phrases, or pictures come to mind when they hear the word 'bully.' List their responses in a display area. Talk about bullying at your school. Ask "Do kids in our school get bullied? Where in our school does this happen? Caution the students to not use student names but give examples of bullying behavior they might have witnessed." Suggest to the students that they could do a research project to discover facts about bullying behavior in their school. Guide the students in developing a questionnaire to give to their peers, school staff, and family members. This should include three to five student-generated questions. (Questions that students might want to include: Have you ever been bullied? Have you ever seen someone else being bullied? How much of a problem do you think bullying behavior is in our school? (scale of 5-1) Where or when do you think bullying behaviors happen?)

X - Plore

Lead a class discussion and ask: "Why do you think people choose to mistreat or bully others?" "How does bullying affect others in our school?" "Do you think members of the school community have a responsibility to address bullying behavior? Why or why not?" "How is our school affected by bullying behavior?" "Is this good for our school?" "Do you think we should and could do anything about it? Why?"

Comminucate

Lead students in brainstorming about the next possible steps to help decrease bullying and increase awareness of the dangers of bullying on campus and in the community. Determine who, what, and when for your plans. Possible ideas: Ask students to write and perform 'anti-bullying' skits. In a class meeting, determine how the skits will be used to inform the school community about bullying. Ideas might include: perform the skits during an all-school assembly hold a Stop Bullying night inviting school families to view the skits Students can produce anti-bullying posters and display them at school and at local restaurants, gyms, play areas, etc.

Launch

Reflect on the project and consider what they have learned as a result. Ask the class if they know what a 'pledge' is and if they have ever taken one. Students might think of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, a Girl or Boy Scout Pledge. Define a pledge for the students as: a solemn promise to do or not to do something. The pledge could include a sentence about not acting as a bully and one about stepping up when they see bullying. Facilitate a writing session, helping the class write the pledge on chart paper and inviting students to sign the chart. The students can also offer their peers and school community members an opportunity to sign the Stop Bullying Pledge. Share this quote – "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
