Dopo varie vittorie (Pastrengo, Goito, Curtatone e Montanara), nella decisiva battaglia di Custoza, gli Austriaci sconfissero i Piemontesi

Armistizio tra Regno di Sardegna e Austria

Gl altri sovrani italiani ritirarono le loro truppe: il Regno di Sardegna stava cercando di annettere Lombardia e ducati di Modena e Parma. Carlo Alberto rimane solo.

Carlo Alberto dichiara guerra all'Austria

Il fronte antiaustriaco si allarga:

• Leopoldo II, Pio IX e Ferdinando II mandarono truppe
• giunsero volontari da tutta Italia ed Europa

Per una rivolta popolare il Papa fu costretto a fuggire.Il 9 febbraio 1849 fu istituita la repubblica, con a capo un triumvirato (Mazzini - Armellini - Saffi).

Abdicazione di Carlo Alberto

La ripresa delle ostilità

Carlo Alberto decise di riprendere da solo le ostilità contro l'Austria. Senza speranza, perse immediatamente a Novara (23 marzo 1849). Carlo abdicò a favore del figlio, Vittorio Emanuele II. L'Austria dettò condizioni di pace ragionevoli.
