WRITING A REVIEW

START

WHAT IS A REVIEW

A review is a short detailed description of a film, play, book, concert, record, art exhibition, etc..... It is either formal or informal in style, depending on the readers it is addressed to. You can be personal and direct.

A good review should consist of:

1. INTRODUCTION

3rd paragrpah

Gives facts and background information concerning the book, film, play etc (setting, type, characters, etc) or practical details about the event, (name where it's held, dates...)

Describe in more detail, give your opinion

3. CONCLUSION

2. MAIN BODY

A conclusion in which the writer includes a final evaluation and a recommendation giving reasons based on the previous paragraphs

2ND PARAGRPAH

General description, first impressions

WHAT SHOULD IT INCLUDE?

1. Describe in detail. Avoid generalisations2. make your description interesting by using a wide range of vocabulary 3. Use relative clauses and reduced relative clauses 4. Include emphatica language (adjectives and adverbs, etc....) to give your opinion and final recommendation.

+ info

Present tenses are usually used for reviews (eg. The action takes place in a small cottage in the country).

- Genially

Past tenses can be used if you are writing a personal account of a performance you have attended, etc. (eg. We arrived just before the curtain went up but it was obvious that the audience were already restless; I thought the first act was spectacular.)

- Genially

El acompañamiento visual…

Your comments will probably include both objective views (based on fact) – the photographs were poor quality or the costumes didn’t fit the actors properly, for example – and subjective views (based on personal feelings) – the story wasn’t interesting or the film was too violent. Make sure, however, that you give reasons for your comments.
