Jazz orginated in the New Orleans and mixed African American music trends like blues and ragtime (a blend of African and European music traditions). It spread across the country due to the Great Migration which brought many African Americans to places like Chigago and New York. Jazz created names like Louis Armstrong who have continued to impact modern-day music.

During the 1920s culture was booming! With the help of jazz, the integration of African American and European music traditions increased. Jazz challenged the social norms and class distinctions while assisting in the break- down of racial barriers. People of all types of backgrounds gathered to listen to jazz. Overall in America, jazz began a symbol of the Roaring Twenties which highlighted spirit and rebellion. Jazz helped shape and create cultural identity while also giving African Americans a space to express themselves and their history creatively.
