Mealy Bugs

Mealy bugs look like white pieces of cotton or fuzzies on your plant. They often cluster on backsides of leaves or in nooks under branches.

Cause

  • Overwatering (they love moisture)
  • Over fertilizing (they love nitrogen)
Treatment:
  • Be mindful of watering and fertilizing
  • Remove mealy bugs with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip
  • Spray the plant with neem oil and mint dish soap

Fungus Gnats

Fungus gnats often appear around the home from produce, like bananas. Fungus gnats may also appear in the days after watering your plant. Causes:

  • Moisture
  • Organic fertilizer (ex: banana peels)
Treatment:
  • Bottom water so the top soil is not moist
  • Add cinnamon to the top soil as a repellent
  • Set up sticky traps

Spider Mites

Spider Mites build webs mainly between branches and crispy, dry leaves. Keep a close eye on plants with lots of branches.Causes:

  • Underwatering
  • Lack of humidity
Treatment:
  • Use a faucet or hose to spray them off the plant
  • Adjust the watering frequency
  • Add a humidifier nearby

Thrips

Thrips can do a significant amount of damange to your plant. They are often found on large, thin leaves. Causes:

  • Flight from one plant to another
  • Dry conditions, like underwatering or lack of humidity
Treatment:
  • Spray plant with faucet or hose to remove thrips
  • Remove infected leaves from the plant to prevent spread
  • Spray the play with Neem oil
