Literary Tool - Imagery Imagery can be defined as words in literature that provide an image in relation to the text. Can be used to go into depth into settings or even emotions.

Example-

This man hath bewitched the bosom of my child.— Thou, thou, Lysander, thou hast given her rhymes And interchanged love tokens with my child. Thou hast by moonlight at her window sung With feigning voice verses of feigning love And stol’n the impression of her fantasy With bracelets of thy hair, rings, gauds, conceits, Knacks, trifles, nosegays, sweetmeats—messengers Of strong prevailment in unhardened youth. With cunning hast thou filched my daughter’s heart, Turned her obedience (which is due to me) To stubborn harshness.—And, my gracious Act 1 Scene 1 Midsummers Dream

This quote uses imagery, a literary tool to really convey the love between lysander and Hermia, apart from the love that Lsyander and Hermia shared, it is shown that Lysander perhaps gives her poetry and other tokens of their love. He has shown up at midnight to sing at her window and has given her many gifts. This use of words really conveys Lysander's love for Hermia. It shows the depthness in their love. The use of imagery here illustrates their strong emotions and Hermias resilience to her father Euges wishes.

Symbols and Symbolism

Symbols in A Midsummers Night Dream

  • The Moon: The moon itself is a phase changing entitiy. In a Midsummer’s Night Dream Shakespeare uses the moon to represent the flow of time, and how things change over said period of time. Shakespeare demonstrates this when Theseus is impatient for the moon to pass so he can be married to Hippolyta. Both Theseus and Hippolyta count down to their wedding by keeping track of the moon's phases
.

  • The Woods: The Woods/Forest traditionally symbolizes mystery, darkness, and the unknown. In a Midsummers Night Dream The woods represents the wild and the untamed, a place of chaos, that completely juxtaposes Athens, where law and order takes precedence. In the woods there’s no rules, there’s magic, and fairies and love potions, an escape from the structured, rational world of the city.

  • The Eyes: Eyes symbolize awareness, perception, and reality. In the real world, seeing is believing, however In a Midsummers Night Dream sight and vision are portrayed as being stolen or held captive, something you can be tricked out of. Strangely enough, the characters in our play start to come to profound conclusions while their sight is playing tricks on them. Bringing up solid questions, is there more than what meets the eye? Can we truly trust everything we see? And is it possible have your vision yet still be blind?
