FISH & CHIPS

Fish and chips is more than just a meal; it´s a beloved British institution that has become synonymous with the culture of London and the Uk as a whole. The origins of this iconic dish can be traced back to the 19th century, during the Industrial Revolution, when urbanization was rapidly changing the landscape of British society.

The concept of frying fish in butter is believed to have been brought to England by Jewish immgrants from Portugal to Spain. However, it was in the working-class neighborhoods of London that fish and chips truly found their place. The first recorded fish and chips shop, known as a "chippy", opened in 1860 in the East End of London, run by a a man named Joseph Malin. This establishment quickly gained popularity among the local population, providing a cheap and hearty meal for workers who needed sustenance after long hours in factories.

The origins

The history

During World War II, fish and chips became even more significant as a source of comfort during the chaos of war.The British government recognized the dish as an essential part of the national diet, and it was one of the few foods that remained available to the public throughout the rationing period.

After the years went by, fish and chips continued to evolve. The dish became a symbol of British culture, often enjoyed on Fridays,a tradition that dates back to the Catholic practice of abstaining from meat on that day.In the latter half of the 20th century, fish and chips faced competition from fast food chains and changing eating habits. However, it has managed to maintain its popularity, with many shops adapting to modern while still honoring traditional recipes.
