FINLAND
Finland is located in Northern Europe, bordered by Sweden to the west, Norway to the north, and Russia to the east. It has a coastline along the Baltic Sea to the south. Finland is known for its characteristic nature and it's famous for its education system, design, and technology.
Structure of the Education System
Early Childhood Education: - Ages 0-6, non-compulsory. - Focus on play-based learning and social skills. Basic Education (Peruskoulu): - Ages 7-16, compulsory for 9 years. - Divided into lower (grades 1-6) and upper levels (grades 7-9). - Emphasis on equal opportunities and individualized learning. Upper Secondary Education: - Options include general education and vocational training. - Lasts 3 years, preparing students for higher education or work. Higher Education: - General academic education. - Vocational training.
key features
Equality and Accessibility: - Education is free at all levels, including meals and materials. - Strong focus on inclusivity and support for all students. No Standardized Testing: There are very few standardized tests, especially in the early years. Instead, teachers assess students' progress through ongoing observations and informal assessments. Individual Support: If a student is struggling, teachers work with them to create personalized learning plans rather than automatically holding them back
key features
Failing grades: The concept of failing a grade is uncommon in Finland. Students are generally promoted to the next grade, and the focus is on personal growth rather than competition. Graduation: The main exam that students take is at the end of their secondary education (the Matriculation Examination), which determines their eligibility for higher education.
Assessment and Evaluation
In Finland, the grading system is based on a scale from 4 to 10:

Insufficent

Fail
In Finland, school begins at the age of seven and continues continuously until the age of sixteen. Grades are not awarded until the age of thirteen. Instead of "failing" students, the system provides individual support for those who do not achieve the required skills. A distinctive aspect of the Finnish system is the mandatory 15-minute break between classes. Teachers remain in classrooms, while students move according to their courses.

INNOVATIVE PRACTICES
- Small Class Sizes: There's a low student-to-teacher ratio to ensure individual attention. - Equal Opportunities: Every student has access to the same quality of education, regardless of background or location. - Shorter School Days, Less Homework: The emphasis is on quality over quantity. - Focus on Well-being: Student well-being is prioritized, with free school meals, counseling services, and a supportive environment that fosters a balanced life.
- Learning for Life: The system is designed not just to pass exams but to develop lifelong learning skills. - Low-pressure environment: Stress and competition are minimized, with more focus on learning at a comfortable pace. - Holistic development: The curriculum is designed to develop both academic skills and personal growth, with arts, physical education, and social skills being integral to the learning experience.
global influence
Finland's education system consistently ranks among the best in international assessments like PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment). Finnish students excel in reading, math, and science, but more importantly, they enjoy learning and feel less stress compared to peers in other countries.
