Mercurio è il pianeta più vicino al Sole e il più piccolo del Sistema Solare. Ha alcune caratteristiche davvero affascinanti:

Dimensioni e Orbita: Mercurio ha un diametro di circa 4.880 km, rendendolo il più piccolo dei pianeti terrestri. La sua orbita è molto eccentrica, il che significa che la distanza dal Sole varia notevolmente durante il suo percorso

L'ATMOSFERA

L’atmosfera di Mercurio è estremamente sottile e viene spesso chiamata “esosfera”, composta da ossigeno sodio, idrogeno, elio e potassio. Le temperature sulla superficie di Mercurio variano drasticamente, passando da circa -173°C di notte a 427°C durante il giorno.

SATELLITI

Mercurio non ha satelliti naturali. La sua vicinanza al Sole rende difficile per qualsiasi oggetto rimanere in orbita attorno al pianeta senza essere catturato dalla gravità del Sole.

Mercurio ha una rotazione molto lenta, impiegando circa 58,65 giorni terrestri per completare una rotazione sul proprio asse. Questo significa che un giorno su Mercurio (da un’alba all’altra) dura circa 176 giorni terrestri.

La scoperta di Mercurio

Gli antichi astronomi, come gli Assiri nel XIV secolo a.C., già conoscevano Mercurio e lo chiamavano "Udu". Le prime osservazioni telescopiche di Mercurio furono fatte da Galileo Galilei nel 1610. La conferma che Mercurio orbita attorno al Sole arrivò nel 1639 grazie agli studi dell’astronomo italiano Giovanni Zupus.
