Il presidente egiziano Gamal Abd el-nassel ordinò la costruzione della diga di Assuan, il tempio rischiava così di essere sommerso.Grazie all'intervento dell'UNESCO nel 1964 il tempio fu accuratamente smontato e spostato di 210m dal bacino della diga, l'impresa durò dal 1964 al 1968 impiegando 2000 operai e oltre 40 milioni di dollari forniti dal oltre 113 stati.

Sulle pareti del tempio sono raffigurate diverse scene di vita quotidiana come cerimonie o banchetti del faraone, infatti anche l'arte egizia non ha scopo decorativo ma simbolico e religioso. Durante la ricostruzione il tempio è stato orientato nella sua direzione originale così nei giorni 22 febbraio e 22 ottobre la sala centrale si illumina con luce naturale.
