Depending on their structure, textures can be of natural origin, such as the texture of grass, or of artificial origin, which humans produce, such as cement, rope or works of art.

Depending on sensory perception

We perceive visual textures through the sense of sight. They are also called graphic textures because they appear in paintings, photographs and works on paper or other materials.

We perceive tactile textures through the sense of touch. In painting and sculpture, artists create many tactile texture effects by combining different materials or by using relief to create different surfaces.
