Reading

Thanksgiving is a special holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada. In the United States, it happens on the fourth Thursday of November. This day is for families and friends to come together and say thank you for what they have.

The first Thanksgiving happened a long time ago, in 1621. The Pilgrims, who were the first settlers in America, had a feast to celebrate their first good harvest. They invited the Native Americans, who helped them learn how to grow food.

Reading

Today, many people celebrate Thanksgiving with a big meal. Common foods include turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Families often sit together at the table and share what they are thankful for. Parades and football games are also part of the celebration.

In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October. It is similar to the American Thanksgiving, with family gatherings and special meals.

Level 5

We will celebrate Thanksgiving together.

Can you tell me where you live?

Can you name some food that are part of a big feast?

Direct Questions (What)

The most straightforward way to ask for information is by using "what" questions:

What are you thankful for?

This is a simple, direct question. It’s often used when speaking with friends or in casual situations.

Can you describe a memorable celebration you had? What made it special?

We have a big feast on Thanksgiving.

What fruit or vegetables would you like to pick during harvest time?

What is your favorite food?

Asking for Information in Different Ways

In English, there are several ways to ask for information, depending on the situation and the level of politeness you want to convey.

Could you share what your favorite food is?

Where do you live?

The farmers have a good harvest this year.

Indirect or Polite Questions (Can/Will)

Sometimes, especially in formal situations, we soften our questions by using "can" or "could." This makes the question more polite:

Can you tell me what you are grateful for?

Here, "can you" adds a layer of politeness, making the request sound less direct and more respectful.

How do you show gratitude to the people you care about?

I feel gratitude for my family.
