Jimmy's Sandwich Shop
Jimmy's sandwich shop is where Miranda, Colin, and Annemarie get jobs together. It is owned by a grumpy man named Jimmy who collects two-dollar bills.
Two-Dollar Bill
The two-dollar bills are why Miranda, Colin, and Annemarie get fired from working at Jimmy's. Jimmy's collection of two-dollar bills goes missing and he thinks that it was stolen. Later, we find out that it was the laughing man who stole the money so he could buy food.
Miranda's School
Miranda's school is the location for many important events. It is where she goes to school with Sal and walks home from every day. It is where she meets Annemarie, Colin, and Julia, and where she realizes Marcus goes to her school as well. At the end of the book, it is where she hides Marcus when the police come looking for him.
Miranda's Books
Miranda is an avid reader. Her favorite book is A Wrinkle in Time, which she often talks to Marcus about. Miranda finds the first note sticking out of her schoolbooks.
The Apartment Keys
Miranda and her mother keep a spare key to their apartment in the fire hose, although Miranda's mother won't give Richard his own key. The first note that Miranda receives asks her for the location of the spare key, and Miranda and her mother later realize that the key has been stolen.
Amsterdam Ave.
Amsterdam Avenue is one of the streets that both Sal and Miranda cross on their walks to and from school. It is the street where Sal almost runs into traffic at the end of the book. Instead, the laughing man saves Sal and gets hit by a truck himself.
Richard's Shoes
Miranda's mother often calls her boyfriend Richard, "Mr. Perfect." Whenever she does this, Richard taps his knee to remind her that he isn't perfect, one of his legs is shorter than the other. Because of this, Richard has to wear lifts in all of his right-foot shoes. Richard's shoes get stolen from the apartment, and Miranda finds them at the end of the story with the last note inside.
The Laughing Man
The laughing man is a homeless man who sleeps underneath a mailbox that Miranda must pass by on her way to and from school. He is always shouting things about the "burn scale," laughing, and kicking the air. Finally, Miranda realizes that the laughing man is Marcus from the future, and he is the one has been sending her notes.
Miranda's Apartment
Miranda and her mother live in a small apartment in the same building as Sal and his mother. Miranda thinks that her apartment is not as nice as Annemarie's apartment. It is scary when Miranda comes home one day to find the apartment door open, but she doesn't think anything has been taken. Later, Miranda finds out that several things were taken that day....
Miranda's Jacket
Miranda is often wearing her jacket in the story because it takes place mostly during the winter in New York. Miranda has to walk to and from school every day, so she needs to stay warm. In her jacket pocket is where she finds the third note.
Jimmy's Bread Delivery
Miranda's job at Jimmy's sandwich shop is to count the bread delivery. This is where she finds the second mysterious note. When Colin steals the two rolls and hides them in his knapsack, that is the first proof.
