To lay the groundwork for their efforts, the SKY-15 team conducted a thorough review of the underlying epidemiology and evidence base for racial differences in early non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). During the protocol development phase, the team examined all inclusion criteria for the study. They made a conscious effort to remove criteria that had traditionally prevented full representation in trials. For instance, the SKY-15 trial now allows HIV- and HBV-positive patients whose diseases are controlled to participate. They have pioneered a new way of working with the USMA team and US CCO, implementing a coordinated and high-touch approach to interactions with the AIR network sites and targeting community sites with diverse patient populations. This personalized outreach has resulted in several sites that initially declined participation, now joining the trial. The team has also collaborated across the organization to remove barriers to US enrollment targets, setting a goal of 20% of global enrollment from US sites, surpassing historical figures for recent Phase 3 studies. Heather and her team have fully leveraged available resources from AIR, HEPS, PDG, and others, building upon them to establish cross-functional best practices. Their efforts have demonstrated Genentech's commitment to inclusive research strategies and the strategic, patient, and commercial value they hold. Through their actions, they are not only making a meaningful impact on the healthcare landscape but also setting an example for the entire industry to follow.
