PRESENT PERFECT VS PAST SIMPLE

PRACTICe

FORMS AND USES

present perfect simple: have/has + past participle (worked, seen...)

PAST EXPERIENCES "Sally has been to the USA three times"" "Have you ever lost your credit card?"

WITH YET AND ALREADY "I've already seen this film twice." "Anna hasn't found a job yet, she's still looking" "-Have you finished the report yet? - No, not yet"

RECENT PAST ACTIONS "I've cut my finger" "Too late! Our train has just left!"

past simple (worked, stopped, had, etc...)

FINISHED PAST ACTIONS "They got married last year" "I didn't have time to do the homework" "What time did you have breakfast this morning?"

present perfect or past simple?

we use the PRESENT PERFECT to talk about past experiences and recent past actions when we don't specify a time.

we often use expressions like : recently., just, already, yet, ever, never

we use the PAST SIMPLE to talk or ask about finished actions in the past, when the time is mentioned or understood

we often use past time expressions: yesterday, last week, two hours ago
