The largest mansory dome in the world. In 1418 the construction works for the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence were almost completed: only the dome was missing. A very high dome formed by 8 segments was required, moreover the base of the dome was very wide and irregular. So a tambour (connecting architectural element) was built above the choir to raise the dome even higher, however, in this way the dome would have to be self-supporting during all the construction phases: therefore one of the most difficult problems to solve was created and the basilica had remained without a dome for almost 100 years. A system of two concentric domes (an inner supporting one and an outer covering one) held together by vertical inner arches and horizontal stone and wood rings was devised. During construction, to make the structure hold up during construction without a system of centrings (support base) bricks were arranged in a manner never seen before using the herringbone method, creating a spiral that gave solidity to the entire structure. Other innovations were also used for the site's scaffolding: cranes, plumb wire rope systems, and others to make the site as safe and functional as possible. Filippo Brunelleschi was the architect and engineer who designed and participated in the construction of the work: he was an example of a civil engineer. Two downsides of the product may be that the construction of it took sixteen years and during the building a high-risk construction site had to be handled, however, Brunelleschi managed to make it very safe.
