Early year's of Queen Victoria's reign
Victoria’s accession to the throne in June 1837, was the beginning of a 63 year long reign The Victorian era marked a period of industrial, military and political progress within Britain, and so it is at this point that literary historians mark the end of the Romantic period.
The Irish Potato Famine, also known as the Great Hunger, began in 1845 when a mold caused a destructive plant disease that spread rapidly throughout Ireland. Before it ended in 1852, the Potato Famine resulted in the death of roughly one million Irish from starvation and related causes, with at least another million forced to leave their homeland as refugees.
In 1840, at the age of 20, Victoria married her cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Initially she was keen to assert her authority over her husband. However, after two years of marriage it was clear that Albert had become the dominant partner in the relationship. At the same time, Victoria embraced the popular, submissive role of a wife, as women were perceived to be naturally inferior to and dependent on men. Victoria increasingly relied on Albert in political matters, particularly foreign affairs. He essentially became king in all but name, forming a sort of dual monarchy.
The repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 by Britain’s parliament was the signature trade policy event of the 19th century. The repeal led the mid-Victorian move to free trade in Britain and helped it in the great expansion of the country’s overseas commerce. *These laws placed tariffs on cereal grain imported from other countries such as wheat and maize to favour domestic agriculture. +
In foreign policy, this was a period of great expansion in trade, therefore, there was a need of new markets. It was fought the first Opium War in China and Great Britain from 1839 to 1842. The opium trade continued, and China had to compensate Great Britain for its losses, it gave Hong Kong island to thr British and increase the number of ports where British could trade.
Revolutions of 1848, series of republican revolts against European monarchies, beginning in Sicily and spreading to France, Germany, Italy, and the Austrian Empire. They all ended in failure and repression and were followed by widespread disillusionment among liberals.
