Update from the Head
As we fast approach Half Term, this week has featured a wide range of retreats for all our Houses. Our students have been able to reflect, taking time out from the hustle and bustle of school life. I had the opportunity to visit some of the retreats personally and it was a pleasure to see our students enjoying their experiences.
I much admired all of St Aidan’s getting up with me to hear the Ampleforth monks sing Matins at 6am. The beauty of the autumn morning and its sparkling light, when it arose a bit later, was there as St Hugh’s attended Mass in the villagers with parishioners, then walked to the beautiful Rievaulx Abbey.
Update from the Head
St Bede’s visited Whitby to learn more about St Hilda and St Bede, while the sun shone brightly. I was impressed by the husbandry skills of the St Cuthbert's & St Thomas' boys when cutting and pollarding on Aumit Hill. What a pleasure a bit later having lunch on the sun-kissed terrace of St Margaret’s, the culinary highlight being Matron’s brownies! We then walked to the Marian Garden which was looking particularly lovely. Each House newsletter captures further information and pictures.
Update from the Head
On Wednesday evening I travelled to Grantley Hall in Ripon and had the pleasure of meeting parents thinking about sending their children to be educated at Ampleforth. Grantley’s Orchard Room was packed with prospective parents, including those from Asygarth and Terrington Hall. This afternoon I enjoyed the St John’s music recital in Main Hall. Excitement is also building for the weekend sports fixtures, but even they are eclipsed by the anticipation of our Nepal Trip at Half Term. Parents can follow our students in Nepal via our dedicated social media account on Instagram.
All best wishes,
Peter

The big event of the week was, of course, House Retreat, with the girls of St Aidan's getting a flavour of monastic prayer life through being a 'Monk for a Day'. This included joining the monastic community at 4 of the services that make up the Divine Office: Matins, Lauds, Vespers and Compline. With House Mass, Midday Office and time for private prayer and adoration, as well as a 'silent lunch', where the girls were read to, we got as close to
emulating a day in the life of a monk as possible. We hope that, by being able to gain such a unique insight into the prayer life of the monks here at Ampleforth, the girls will have been able to reflect more deeply on their own faith and relationhip with God. We are immensely grateful to Fr Philip, Fr Ambrose and the monastic community for affording us this opportunity and to Gabrielle Foster, our Lay Chaplain, in facilitating the finer details of the arrangements.

Vespers: 6pmCompline: 8:15pm Matins: 6am Lauds: 7:30am
The 24 hour cycle started for the girls at 6pm on Wednesday evening, joining the monks for Vespers. On a rotation, each member of the house had the chance to sit in the monks'choir alongside the monks for at least one of the services. Even though the 5am start on Thursday was a shock to the system for some, we were rewarded with some spectacularly beautiful and tranquil valley moments - this image captured by Clare Moses on one of our commutes down to the Abbey Church.

House Retreat
Late morning gave the girls some tech-free time in deanery groups to get to know each other better.
House Retreat
Thursday afternoon saw the girls engage in a carousel of activities, including the chance to visit the Abbey Visitor Centre and Marian Garden, alongside group Lectio Divina A highlight of the afternoon for many of the girls was the chance for each deanery group to have an audience and Q&A session with House Chaplain Fr Philip, where they were able to gain answers to their questions about monasticelife. This developed into rich conversations which could have continued long beyond the alloted time. I have a feeling that Fr Philip is going to be on the receiving end of a string of invitations to the house over the coming weeks.
We all know that food is an important part of any retreat and the girls did not go without! On Wednesday evening they had a lovely pasta supper and doughnuts in house, where they also had the chance to show Matron their appreciation and sing her 'Happy Birthday'. With special additions to retreat breakfast on Thursday and a Fish and Chip van as a treat to round off the day, the girls may have been tired, but went to bed happy and with full stomachs.

A reminder that if you'd like to keep up with the goings on of the House and girls, then do find us on social media. Please do also feel free to drop me line with news or pictures of interesting or note-worthy things the girls have been up to in the holidays. It's always nice to share their experience more widely on these pages to celebrate the many gifts and achievements of the girls.
Dear Parents, Bede's girls enjoyed a lovely Retreat Day in Whitby on Thursday. This week we plan to finish prep so that we can enjoy a well earned rest at half term. However, Year 11 and 13s will be taking some revision home. Any early departure travel arrangements need to be agreed by Dr Pomroy through the Parent Portal and we would appreciate all Parents filling in the appropriate travel forms for School Travel as soon as possible, if they have not already done so. Please contract the House Team if there are any problems. Warmest regards, Charmaine

TUTOR OF THE WEEK
YEAR 11's being led through this important exam year by the brilliant Miriam Cook
This is Mrs. Cook's third year in House. Since she joined she has made the House stronger with her intelligence, kindness and her ability to inspire us with her delicious baking. She is a brilliant woman who is always around to help with academic and pastoral issues. We all appreciate her enthusiasm and kindness towards everyone in Bedes and in the wider school. Thank you Mrs. Cook.

The Busiest Week?
This last week is likely the busiest of the term, if not the year overall. Assessments, academic progress and a raft of fixtures, activities and events have made this week a jam-packed one. As a result the pause given for House Retreat was a timely one, and added to the impact of the day.
With the theme of Friendship, the House pulled together and through various acts of Service, reflective sessions and some time walking outside of the valley the boys benefitted from a much needed respite. Following the recently opened St. Aelred Pilgrim Way gave a lovely backdrop to his writings on friendship. Whilst the scenery was stunning, what was the most impressive thing was the sense of community, the inter-year friendships and the effort that the boys put into the day. Every boy put something back into the community, for one another and there is no better way to show friendship than that.
If you get chance, please do pop to see the recently planted Friendship Orchard at the end of the house.
Half term is almost upon us (somehow!) and please do confirm travel and/or pick up plans through the usual channels.

Dear Parents, It was an absolute pleasure to spend the last day and a half on retreat. The students were the perfect blend of inquisitiveness and respect. They espoused our core values throughout our time at Fountains Abbey and on the walk to Ripon Cathedral. We then prayed together in the Crypt before having Mass in St Wilfrid’s Church.
My thanks go to Fr Ambrose, Miss Foster the house staff and Canon Ian Smith, for making it such an inspirational time together.
This weekend, we have fixtures with Ashville, preparation for the Great Yorkshire Bake-Off, and a trip to Flamingo Land for the boarders. The half-term will culminate with House Punch. This is a celebration of the House and is celebrated in line with the Feast Days of our patrons, St Edward and St Wilfrid. The House Team and I wish you all an enjoyable half-term with your children and look forward to their return. Sebastian Phillips

Dear Parents and Guardians, Yesterday we had our wonderful retreat - the House enjoyed Mass in the Village with Fr Kentigern, on the Feast Day of St Ignatius of Antioch, before walking to Rievaulx Abbey. There we had a tour of the ruins, and reflected on community life, before returning to St Hugh's House to decide on the patron saints for our deaneries. The boys selected: St Ignatius of Antioch, the Blessed Carlos Acuti, St Maximillian Kolbe, St Edward the Confessor and St Aelred of Rievaulx. Thank you to everyone for their patience during the "technology cleanse". Some handled it better than others, but all benefitted. Dan Housemaster, St Hugh's House

Dear Parents A lovely week with the girls. The dominant event this week was of course house retreat. Sleeping and praying were the themes... Mostly prayer you will be glad to hear. The staff all led a session that showed different ways to pray or to think about prayer. Moragh made a lovely lunch. As ever the girls are always so grateful and polite thanking her and the rest of the staff for all their efforts. They are such a pleasure so its easy to make an effort for them. Fr Oswald ended the retreat with special evening prayers including a litany of the saints calling upon all the holy women of the church to aid us. After the retreat I think we all felt very holy and hopefully inspired to realise that prayer takes many different forms. On Sunday we look forward to the House Bake Off the only competition St Margaret's is yet to win!! Moragh is fuming. Will she be vindicated this Sunday, we will see.Have a lovely half term with the girls and I look forward to welcoming them back fully rested!Best wishes Rebecca Best wishes Rebecca
