I Paesi Bassi nel 1602 creò la "Compagnia delle Indie Orientali" che controllava l Asia, e nel 1616 creò "la Compagnia delle Indie Occidentali" per controllare i propri territori nelle americhe. L'esercito Olandese conquisto territori in tutto il mondo imponendo il proprio potere in modo diretto sui paesi conquistati o creando accordi con il governo locale..

il Groot Desseyn
Nel 1621 il governo olandese pianifico il "Groot Desseyn" ovvero il piano che avrebbe portanto alla fine l egemonia portoghese sul commercio degli schiavi e la riduzione dei loro terriori. Questo piano entrò in atto nel 1623 e durò 14 anni. Questa sfida fra le due potenze non ebbe un vero e proprio vincitore perche i portoghesi riuscirono a tenere la maggior parte dei loro territori ma gli olandesi risciurono a conquistare i caraibi e le antille.
