Failures are required for success By Alexis Lara-Berrueco

The Great BattleS of 9th Grade
The 9th grade was a year unlike no other. It was full of adversities and doubt. It was the first time I faced failure and fear. I thought it would be an easy ride but that idea would turn out to be brief. This year was important for learning and self-discovery, leading to significant mental shifts and anxiety. It became a turning point that shaped my perspective for the future and it is still impacting me now.
The Beginning
The year is 2018, the young Alexis Lara-Berrueco is getting his troops ready for the next war, High School. Alexis has had a impressive record. His victory in the Middle School War, especially the battle of 7th grade where he ended with a 4.0 shaped him into a confident General. He is coming overly confident though, and underestimates his enemy. His troops feeling their Generals confidence feel this too will be an easy war to wage. They truly don’t know the sacrifices they will face. The reality that awaits for them as they move.

The Great Invasion of James A. Garfield High School
The day is August 20, General Lara invaded James A. Garfield High School with 3,000 troops. Garfield High school did not defend their position Status: Successful
All enemy's are the same, they fear my arrival more than the actual battle.
- General Alexis Lara-Berrueco
The battle of 9th grade, The BEGINNING
When in Doubt Never show it
After the Battle he told his forces to relax and await a response. This would be his first mistake.
The enemy forces strike back
After General Lara told his forces to relax, he relaxed himself as well. It was then that the forces of Science class conducted a successful raid on their position. Over 200 men were killed, but he did not show his worry. He did not want the moral to fall, not even an inch.
In September I submitted a Science assignment and failed it. I thought I knew why but I did not change my ways of doing homework.
I would fail my assignment but left it at that. I told myself I failed because I was lazy, because I let my guard down. The issue was I didn't attempt to learn the material. It was easy for me to move on and to an extent I feel that is literacy. I felt I learned from my experience but my mistake was that I did not acquire any any discipline from it. I learned being lazy does not help but I did not make an attempt to make changes to dedicate more time on my homework. This is where the questions comes in, was I really literate in this situation? The article "What is Literacy" states, "Thus, literacy is mastered through acquisition, not learning, that is, it requires exposure to models in natural meaningful, and functional settings, and teaching is not liable to be very successful-it may even initially get in the way." (Gee, 23) This learned experience although not obtained from teachers, did not mean I acquired the discipline to change. This means I was not literate to the extent I believed I was. As time went on I did not improve my grades since I kept trend going. Gee furthers the idea literacy with discourse. The idea is a primary and secondary discourse. The discourse discussed is based on langue and ones ability to master both languages. Their ability to critique one discourse with another is powerful literacy. (23) It is interesting to see how the language of education and the language of discipline did not align. I could be using the argument incorrectly, but it still relates to the idea of two discourses not aligning leading to a lack of comprehension.

The Great Invasion of James A. Garfield High School
The SEP. Raid
General Lara could not defend against the enemy
After a loss he could not live with. General Lara attempted to attack the English Class forces who numbered in the 6,000. Clearly out numbered, he still attacked. He had never been posed with such a difficult enemy,
The Great Invasion of James A. Garfield High School
I could not think farther than engaging the enemy. I don't know what happened.
- General Alexis Lara-Berrueco
This was not supposed to happen, then why did it?
The enemy was smarter, they were on another level. I have yet to reach that level of understanding
The battle was lost because he did not know what was going on. He had never been posed with such problems before, so why couldn't he come up with something. In the Middle School war his leaders told him what to do and he executed, but now it was up to him to create a solution when instructions were not clear.
9th grade English was difficult to adjust to. Throughout Middle school I was never placed in the advanced classes and therefore they guided us in every assignment, Similar to banking education. It was 9th grade, were although I was still in the lower level classes, was left alone with the assignment. It was here were could not get bove a 60% on my assignments. The reason was that our teacher used the problem posing educational method which states, "The problem-posing method does not dichotomize the activity of the teacher-student: She is not "Cognitive" at one point and "narrative" at another. She is always "cognitive", whether preparing a project of engaging in dialogue with the students." (80) When it came to discussing assignments we were place in groups and talked among ourselves. She wanted to see what we would come up with. Due to a being part of the banking system of education our previous years we struggled to adapt. The first couple of exams resulted in F's. It was here where I was started to question my abilities. I was not supposed to fail, I was not supposed to be this behind in class. Fortunately for me, I understood where I was standing and I made it my goal to improve. I began thinking critically and connected ideas that I would not connect before. I started to feel confident in ideas outside of class because the problem posing education allowed me to build a sense of confidence in my decision making.

The Great Invasion of James A. Garfield High School
The SEP. Raid
General Lara could not defend against the Science forces
The OCT. Counter
After failing to overcome the English forces, they countered attacked.
With little time left, It was up to General Lara to decide if the war was still viable. Had he learned anything yet?
Holding the line
One final assault, one final effort to push towards and hold the line. General Lara would attempt to retain the land he gained in his first Assault. He knows deep down he can not win this war, but he can at least leave with some pride. 1000 reinforcements are on their way. He learned from the Flanking maneuver and it ready to incorporate it into his next attack.
I became literate in the battle field. I understood it's more than engaging the enemy.
-General Alexis Lara-Berrueco
Not showing off, just seeing the outcome.
play smart and end Smart
He Flanked the enemy, and defeated them. As soon as the attack ended and they settled in their position intel on the enemy came in. It turns out there were 14,000 troops on the other side of campus.
We hold the line, we await till were better equipped and ready for War.
General Lara stood in-front of his troops. He had learned his lesson and no longer pursued the un winnable war. He said, "I have made you fight when I knew not to fight. You have pushed when I no longer believed in pushing. Next year will be better, next year we will succeed, I promise.
The following year I ended with a 3.8 overall GPA. I was able to take more than half of campus that year. I was becoming literate
As 9th grade came to an end I was still not satisfied with what I had accomplished. I ended with a 2.7 GPA but I understood why. There were nights where I panicked because I felt I ruined my chances of a good University. I decided I would make a difference and commit myself a lot more in my 2nd year of high school. I decided to actually learn and put into practice what I learned. I learned to be disciplined in Science class, I learned to think critically in English, and I learned failure will happen but I can always overcome These events were not just learned, but understood and acknowledged, "The development of one particular capability seldom means the development of others." (75, Mind in Society) Because of these learning experiences I did not get the GPA I hoped for. But I became literate in my position as a student, and I am able to combine the two two discourse in the first event. Education and discipline now went hand and hand. The reality of my understanding was not yet discovered until English, but I ended up realizing how much work I needed to do to improve. With all of this combined I became literate, I could figure out what were my other weak points lay. This is supported in Mind and Society, "Learning does not alter our overall ability to focus attention but rather develops various abilities to focus attention on a variety of things."(75). Going into my second year I conquered half of campus. I used all the skilled I learned and the new mental development to become literate and excel academically and as a person. I spent hours studying, asking questions, and being confident in my own ideas.
The reason for my MultiModal stems from my background in history. Growing up i enjoyed watching documentaries on wars, more specifically the civil war. I tried to format it the same way the documentaries were formatted. I added a quote after each battle and tried to show how the war progressed with maps. Overall I feel I ran into challenges being able to convert my stories into a war since it required more pages to keep the book flowing. I felt I had to sacrifice some parts to keep the idea of war going. Overall, I enjoyed working on this project and found myself getting excited when working on the maps and the narrative. I originally worked on an actual documentary but found it difficult to keep the flow going since I jumped back and fourth from the story and the readings. I moved to the book not long before the project was due to help me tell two stories at once.
