The european starling

The european starling or sturnus vulgaris is;

  • A medium sized bird
  • Known for its iridescent black feathers and ability to mimic sounds
  • It ofter forms large flocks and is highly adaptable to various environments

Where did it come from ?

By a man who wanted to introduce all the bidrs mentionned in Shakspeare's plays

The European starling is native to Europe, Asia, and parts of the North Africa.

It was introduced to North America in the late 1800s, when a group of starlings was released in NY's central park

where is it invasive and how did it get there ?

The european starling is invasive in North America, especially in the United States. After its release in the 1890s, the species spread rapidly across the comtinent, thriving in urban and rural environments alike.

what is the problem/potential impact ?

European starling are highly aggresive and outcompete native bird species for food and nesting sites. They damage crops like grains and fruits, causing economic losses for farmers. Additionally, their large flocks can create noise pollution and health hazards due to the accumulation of droppings..

Is there any pratical solution ?

Solutions include effortes to control populations by removing nests, using scare tactics like loud noises or predator decoys, and modifying buildings to prevent nesting. However controlling their spread is difficult because they are so adaptle and have already established large populations across North America

Deterrence (scare tactics)

Exclusion (physical barriers)

Control ( population management)
