Disclaimer

We are here to SHARE our experience and knowledge of Phonics for Reading, NOT to tell you what to do! Any questions/comments you may have - please direct them to your lead teachers and they will contact Sarah Holbrook.

How does this involve me?

3rd Grade

OPTIONAL: Phonics for Reading is a resource that teachers can use in small group (15-20 minutes) instruction for T2 (Fundations is T1 phonics instruction) suggested: 15 - 20 minutes in a small group 2-3x per week

4th Grade

Fourth grade does not have Fundations. Therefore, fourth grade has Phonics for Reading as a resource to assist students at T2 and T3. It is encouraged to use Phonics as a tool/resource to teach kids who have phonics deficits based on the WTW or iReady diagnostic.

STeps for getting started

1- Place students in the right level of the program

3- Teach lessons using the scripted text provided in the Teacher Guide

Students will be assessed using the WTW spelling inventory as well the Passage Reading Fluency (WCPM)

Each book, or level, has their own teacher-directed lessons which are in the Teacher's Guide.

4- Monitor students' progress

2- Group students for instruction

Using the data collected from the assessments, students should be placed at a particular level. Also, use your professional judgement when placing students on levels. *Level 1 is typically designed for small-group instruction of up to 10 students working at the same skill level. Level 1 may also be used on a one-to-one basis.

There are many opportunitites to monitor student progress.

  • Work check activities
  • Checking up activity used as formative-assessment measures
  • Placement tests
