Rosa Parks & The Bus Boycott

Back to event

These powerful images illustrate the significant progression of the bus boycott, which began when Rosa Parks boarded a Montgomery bus and refused to give up her seat to a white man. Her arrest ignited a flame that would fuel the Civil Rights Movement for years. The Montgomery Improvement Association, known as the MIA, organized the bus boycott, which began on December 15, 1955. Soon after, the entire community decided to stop using the buses as a means of transportation. On December 20, 1956, the Supreme Court resided that segregated public transportation was unconstitutional. The Montgomery bus boycott was a stepping stone to the beginning of the Civil Rights movement, and it inspired others to follow in the footsteps of peaceful protest.

The Little Rock Nine were nine black students carefully chosen by the NAACP to attend Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. On the first day, the students were stopped by a riot and had to turn back for the student's safety. On the second day, the governer called the State Guard to stop them from entering the school. Eventually, President Eisenhower called the National Guard, and the Little Rock Nine were finally allowed to get in the school. After the National Guard left, the Little Rock Nine endured heavy bullying, but they persisted, and made it through the school year. The next year, the governer closed down the school in an attept to stop the Little Rock Nine from going the school, and the High school stayed closed for 10 more years

The Freedom Riders tested whether they could sit wherever they wanted on public transportation, eat in integrated dining rooms, and use integrated facilities such as restrooms and water fountains. The Freedom Riders aimed to use public transportation from Washington D.C. to New Orleans, Louisiana. The rides were mostly smooth until they got to Alabama. On May 14th, 1961, a bus containing freedom riders was bombed by the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) in Anniston, Alabama. They were assaulted and attacked by a mob, but still continued their journey. In Birmingham, Alabama, Police Commissioner Eugene (Bull) Conner decided to put a stop to the rides once and for all. He encouraged the KKK to attack the riders with bicycle chains, iron pipes, and baseball bats.Afterward, the buses refused to drive the Freedom Riders, and there was a "cooling off period" before the Freedom Rides were abandoned.
