A construção da Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Lapa insere-se no contexto da expansão do Barroco em Portugal nos séculos XVII e XVIII, época em que a monarquia dos Bragança consolidava o seu poder, com Vila Viçosa como um dos centros principais. O Barroco português destaca-se pela ornamentação exuberante, uso dramático de luz e sombra e forte apelo emocional, refletindo os ideais da Contra-Reforma.
