Luka Modric was born on september 9, 1985, in Zadar, Croatia, when the region form part of Yugoslavia.In 1991, the Croatian War of Independence began when Modrić was 6 years old. His grandfather was killed by Serbian forces, and he lived as a refugee in a hotel for several years, close to constant battles with bombs and weapons.
