Descobertas reinado D. João II e passagem cabo das Tormentas

D.João II

João II, tendo como cognome "o Príncipe Perfeito", foi o Rei de Portugal e dos Algarves em dois períodos diferentes, primeiro durante quatro dias em novembro de 1477 e depois de 1481 até sua morte em 1495. Era o filho mais novo do rei Afonso V e sua primeira esposa Isabel de Coimbra.João II foi um grande defensor da política de exploração atlântica, dando prioridade à busca de um caminho marítimo para a Índia. Após ordenar as viagens de Bartolomeu Dias e de Pêro da Covilhã, foi João II que delineou o projeto da primeira viagem.

Passagem cabo das Tormentas

Foi descoberto pela primeira vez em 1488 pelo navegador português Bartolomeu Dias. Contam as crónicas da época que, como foi avistado depois de vários dias em que os marinheiros sofreram violentas tempestades (tormentas), aquele navegador lhe pôs o nome de cabo das Tormentas. Ao retornar, entretanto, com a notícia, o rei João II de Portugal mudou-lhe o nome porque, ao ser dobrado, mostrou a ligação entre o oceano Atlântico e o oceano Índico e prometia a tão desejada chegada à Índia. Chamou-lhe, por isso, cabo da Boa Esperança
