What could happen if a city had a lot of tourists?
Prereading
Kyra's
I think that the advent of low-cost travel has been an absolute disaster for our planet. Now that traveling is cheap, everyone is doing it and often. Think of the carbon footprint that we are making with so many flights. The
“Love Exploring” website told me that the number of commercial flights had almost doubled since the first low-cost airlines were introduced in the 1990s.

In today's blog, I'll give you my opinion and then we'll hear from one male viewer and one female.

Another problem with the low cost travel is that everywhere you go is super crowded. You have to get up super early to wait in lines with thousands of people to see all of the sites. My sister said that she had waited for three and a half hours to get into the Vatican. The
whole time she was waiting, there were annoying street vendors trying to sell her junk. You also have the option of paying a supplementary fee so that you can get in before the crowd, but a lot of low-cost travelers can’t afford these fees.

Around the tourist sites are a ton of restaurants and shops that are complete tourist traps. The restaurants serve premade, frozen food and try to pretend that it is a delicious, handmade local dish. They also charge you about three times more than the dish would
actually cost for the locals. I bet the majority of the people who go to Italy didn’t even have an authentic Italian meal. Even worse is the number of cheap souvenir shops that sell all sorts of cheap plastic junk that just ends up in a landfill.

I think we ought to put a limit on the amount of flights there are everyday and also limit how many tourists can enter each city. This will cause the prices to go up, but also improve the quality of goods
and services. Having fewer tourists will reduce the congestion in these famous, historical cities from being overrun and turning into a theme park. Traveling isn’t a right, and we should be working to protect our historical places as well as our environment.
