Prereading

What do you need in order to play sports?

Let's Hear It!

The weekly column where you can let the world know how you feel.
Jake Edmond writes:
Lately I have seen a lot of announcements inviting people from the town to participate in sports leagues. I just want to make my opinion clear. I do like sports, but only at the professional level. I don’t understand why amateurs would want to waste their time playing sports without getting paid. Lots of people don’t agree with me, so I have found some reasons to support my opinion.
amateurs
These parents obviously know that they are not very good at soccer. There is no possibility that these adults will become professionals, and they probably don't have a lot of free time. I don’t know why they bother to play.
To begin, amateur sport leagues take a lot of time that could have been spent doing something productive. Certainly there are better things to do with your time than play a silly game of soccer on the weekend. I sometimes see parents playing a game all Saturday morning instead of spending time with their children.
obviously
Certainly, if you are not very good at a sport, it is a waste of money to spend a fortune on it. The equipment also takes up a lot of space in your house during the majority of the year when you are not using it.
The sporting leagues also cost a lot of money. You have to buy equipment, special shoes for running, uniforms and water bottles. Sometimes you also have to pay fees in order to rent a basketball court or soccer field to play. All these costs of playing a sport quickly add up.
court
fun on the weekend. I hope I have made my reasons clear and that you now agree with my opinion. I think that people shouldn’t sign up for recreational sports leagues. I also wish the city would stop funding these frivolous clubs.
The last reason that amateurs shouldn’t waste time playing sports is the potential for injury. At any time during these games, you could trip or slide or fall and have a serious problem. It seems foolish to risk a serious complication in your life just to have a little bit of
frivolous
